Weekly Newsletter 8/24/2008

Greetings!
I always feel as if HHAFFA's year begins in September, so "Happy New Year"! After a few weeks of relatively little activity--we are ready to kick it in high gear! ARE YOU READY????

Let's take care of housekeeping items first:--We send weekly newsletters to over 200 email addresses, yet only a relatively few people participate in our activities. I wonder if some people are not receiving the emails and they are floating out in cyberspace, or if people just do not care to receive our newsletter anymore. So, to help us out, please reply to this newsletter if you would still like to receive our weekly updates! If you do not respond, after two weeks, you will automatically be removed from our mailing list. As an added incentive--we are going to put all names of people who reply in a hat and draw out names for prizes. I will announce winners at our Quarterly Meeting.

--What Quarterly Meeting, did you ask? Our Quarterly Meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 23 at 6 pm in the HHAFFA office. We will also have a "Fill a Bag with Greeting Cards" for $5 fundraiser! Sunrise Greeting Cards (bought out by Hallmark) has donated hundreds (if not thousands) of greeting cards to HHAFFA. They include Birthday, Anniversary, Wedding, Thank You, New Baby, Encouragement, Sympathy, Blank, and many, many more!! We'll give you a plastic shopping bag, and you fill it as full as you can, for only $5! (Also--refreshments will be served!)

Add these activities to your calendar:

--HHAFFA will be participating in the Oolitic Parade to be held on Sept 13th. We will have our truck, and we would love for HHAFFA to be as well represented in the Oolitic Parade as we were in the 4th of July parade. Details will be in upcoming newsletters.

--Quarterly Meeting on September 23--Don't forget Red Roses for Red Cross. Please call 275-5162 or email Betsy at bhenley@hhredcross.org to order roses-$20 per dozen delivered (payment due by Aug 31 or Sept 11) Don't forget that the Hoosier Hills Chapter of Red Cross started HHAFFA!

--The American Federation of Government Employees has collected items to be sent to our troops, because one of their shop stewards is in the National Guard in Iraq. There will be a packing party at the National Guard, whenever the FRG decides to do it. We'll pass on the word as soon as we know.

--The Persimmon Festival is the last weekend in September. Larry Arnold has volunteered to drive a truck in the parade. Please do not hesitate to call Larry to volunteer to help--and EVERYONE show up to walk!! Thank you, Larry!!! Again, we'll pass on info as soon as we receive the details! and there is more . . .

--Please join us in the FLY THE FLAG campaign! On Thursday, September 11th, 2008, an American Flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment house, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on the seventh anniversary of one of our country's worst tragedies. We do this to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

--Don't forget to keep Kyle, Veda and Ethan Daugherty in your thoughts and prayers. If you haven't done so yet, send a card:

Joyce Daugherty
PO Box 391
Bedford, IN 47421

Please send any cards meant for Veda and Kyle to Joyce's address. Veda's address can not be made public and he is moving in the next few days so he will not recieve any mail that is mailed to him at this time. Joyce will forward the cards to Veda and Kyle.

--Don't forget to send a card to Ashley Wilkinson:

Card Shower Request

From Susan Wilkinson, through Tom Boscher:

"Cards, letters, whatever, really help to brighten the day of our soldiers serving in the war. Ashley is doing well but is very homesick and bored, she's on the final stretch, hopefully coming home before Christmas. If you have time she'd love to hear from you."

A Way To Say Thank You To Our Troops

This is pretty neat.....(30 second video)...Have you ever seen one of our military walking past you and wanted to convey to them your thanks, but weren't sure how, or it felt awkward? Recently, a gentleman from Seattle created a gesture which could be used and has started a massive movement to get the word out. Please, everybody, take just a moment to watch...The Gratitude Campaign.

Weekly Newsletter 8/8/2008

Nancy was a social butterfly this weekend and didn't have time to do a newsletter. Things she will be including in the newsletter:

Red Roses for Red Cross - the Hoosier Hills Chapter has its annual Les Sohlstrom Memorial Rose Sale going on now. Call, 275-5162 (Red Cross) or email Betsy, bhenley@hhredcross.org to order Roses - $20 per dozen delivered (payment due by Aug 31st or Sept 11th when Roses will be delivered. The Hoosier Hills Chapter started HHAFFA and also provides emergency message service 24/7 for all military families.

We were invited to march in the Oolitic Parade on Sept 13th. Put it on your calendars!

The Persimmon Festival is coming up. Unfortunately, neither Nancy or Betsy can be there the whole week. If anyone else wants to take charge of a booth, the position is open. We can help you with the planning. Also, we need a truck in order to enter the parade. If we don't get a volunteer, HHAFFA won't have a booth or parade entry at the Persimmon Festival.

Nancy will be giving us an update on the number of miles walked to Iraq. Walkers meet on Tuesday at 7 pm at Thorton Pavilion.

The American Federation of Government Employees has collected items to be sent to our troops because one of their shop stewards is in the National Guard in Iraq. There will be a packing party at the National Guard Armory whenever the FRG decides to do it.

We have received several thank yous from troops for packages and phone cards.

Don't forget to let us know when military addresses change! I have heard through the grapevine about a couple who have come home and a couple who may be leaving soon. Also, don't forget to let us know when your email address changes!

God Bless Our Troops and their families!

Card Shower

Lisa Henry emailed yesterday with a card shower request for her son, Joel. Joel is in Afghanistan and Lisa says, "I spoke to Joel today and ended up in tears. It seems as if my Joel is gone. He's in some dark place, and I'm not able to pull him back . . ." Please take a moment to send an encouraging word to Joel today and keep Joel, and Lisa and family, in your thoughts and prayers!

From Hoosier Hills Red Cross

This is a message from the Hoosier Hills Chapter American Red Cross about a new program to support military families.

The Congress, the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs has partnered with the Red Cross to assume additional responsibilities in support of the Armed Forces, their family members and veterans. Congress appropriated significant funding in its FY08 budget to assure continued support of this vital part of the Red Cross mission. This is called the Joint Family Support Assistance Program.

Indiana has been chosen as a pilot state for this program to be implemented and they are asking for our ideas. And the Hoosier Hills Chapter is asking for your ideas. The deadline for submitting projects to be funded is the end of August. New projects will also mean new volunteer opportunities.

On Tuesday, Aug 5, at 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, there will be a Military Open House at the Hoosier Hills Chapter, 2119 29th St., Bedford, with free food for you to come and give us your ideas on how the Red Cross could better serve military families in our tri-county area.

The other item is prayers for Kellie and Joey Johnson and family. Kellie suffered a severe stroke last night. Last year Kellie organized our participation in the Persimmon Festival and did a really great job.

And keep all our families and troops in your prayers!
Betsy
